Woah, can’t believe this happened during my 3 month absence. My favorite Dutch producers made one of the best disco house tracks of the year, if not just flat out tracks of the year.

Raise Your Weapon (Madeon Extended Remix) – Deadmau5 (Golden Banana)
Madeon shows a lot more promise than Porter Robinson in terms of production skill, but I’m still a little weary to play these live. Too poppy for my style, but still damn impressive. Complextro, but on the synth pop side,

Run The World (Girls) (Chris Lake Club Mix) – Beyonce (Silver Banana)
HUGE Progressive House track on the Electro side (what’s that genre called again…). Also super fun to hear the original Pon De Floor samples expertly mixed in.

Pressure (Alesso Remix) – Alex Kenji, Starkillers, Nadia Ali (Silver Banana)
Epic Swedish style Progressive House. If you’re in desperate need of a track that will slay your festival crowd, this is it, guaranteed. SHM will be dropping this for sure, if they haven’t been already. The original of this kills as well if you’re unfamiliar.

You Are feat. MYGOD (Original Mix) – Beckers, D-Nox
Tech House on the Techy side. Takes a while to get to the good part, unfortunately, but it’s Techtastic.

Kingdom – Spor
Drum & Bass. This shit is fucking nuts. RIDE THE SNAKE! Also fun fact that I just learned, Spor is the DnB alias of Feed Me, who’d a thunk it. Cheers to Sonic Prophet for the info and the track recommendations, I really do appreciate it. While I’m at it, cheers to Crustacean Cognition, I can always count on you as well. Heavy Complextro style Electro House, but not over done which is crucial. The French always know how to keep it clean.

Progressive House? Could be Electro or Tech House, pretty confusing. Ravey track with poppy vocals. The Italian trio never dissapoint.

Electro House, but extremely Funky. In other words, not a banger but groovy as fuck.

So since when did Feed Me blow up? I remember posting about this homie way back when I was calling out Gartner as the second coming years ago. Anyways, looks like he’s come along way, as was evident when I saw him on Friday. #Reviewtime

For starters, doors opened at the Music Box at 11:30. Besides the odd lateness of entry, I was immediately surprised by the nameless opening DJ. He spun some super heavy Dubstep will noteworthy skill and even mixed in some Moombahton/Moombahcore/Moombahcunt to all of our delight. One half of gLAdiator got immediately sprung, and I was forced to wipe his tears. By 12:40, the opener was done and they opened the curtain.

Dirty Talk

Behind the curtains was a stage packed full of super hip looking people, half of them with cameras around their necks, a bunch of crazy lights’n'shit, and the most giant tool of an MC I’ve ever had to endure. Besides all of that, I was also crushin mad hard on the cute girl in the right of the above picture. They dropped moar heavy ass Dubstep for the next hour or so with a steez that could only be described as poker face. Definitely enjoyable, especially if you’re a dub head, but eventually the abrasive wall of sound grew boring and tracks indistinguishable. I was ready for Feed Me well before they were done. Some track highlights were made by everyone’s favorite couple:

Cracks (Flux Pavillion Remix) – Freestylers feat. Belle Humble (Golden Banana)
The whole crowd sung along, naturally. There’s probably some hilarious pictures of us doing just that in the front row.

Derpstep, slightly more swagger than other tracks of the night.

Feed Me

God I love Feed Me, and this show increased my love for the Mau5trap man tenfold. Seriously impressive mixing, and goddam I was ready to hear some 128. They also signaled his entrance by bringing 3 raver chick stage dancers to the front, courtesy of the promoters LA Beatdown, I suppose. Cheap trick for a good party, but enjoyed nonetheless. He looked like he was having so much fun the entire time as he danced almost non stop with a smile, something I always enjoy seeing. The crowd went nuts 100% of his set. One highlight was when he dropped this Tech House track and then mixed perfectly in key to his brilliant track The Spell (cop it HERE). However, when the whole crowd was jumping, one of the idiot hipster ass photographers (with a tumblr you’ve probably never heard of but has a book deal anyways, you can get it at Urban Outfitters) unplugs the mixer and cuts the music. Feed Me screams at him, and we don’t see him for the rest of the night. When the music finally gets going again, he brings back the energy almost immediately with his track Grand Theft Ecstasy (cop it HERE). He of course brings it into Dubstep, back to House, drops some Drumstep and DnB, and even drops some Moombahton. We were all blown away, and it certainly killed the crowd. Highlights:

Innocence (Feed Me Remix) – Nero (Golden Banana)
My god I didn’t know about this track until he dropped it. My reaction to this was like gLAdiator’s to hearing that 108 bpm.

Reptile’s Theme – Skrillex (Silver Banana)
Everyone from Feed Me to Dillon Francis is dropping this track in their Moombahton sets. Debatable as to weather or not it’s actually Moombahton (I’d vote not) but definitely a monster slow jam, great way to get your crowd into a Moombah set.

Apologies to Figure. I really wanted to see your set, but since you went on at 3:30 we were well ready to bounce. If anyone reading this DID stay, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

So if you’ve been paying attention to this whole Moombahton (pronounced moombuhtone) thing, you’ve probably heard of Munchi. In my utmost expert and always unquestionably accurate opinion, he is the undisputed king of Moombahton. However, looks like he’s already moved on and just put out an Juke EP. What’s Juke, you ask? From Chicago, it’s like Baltimore Club meets Drum N Bass with a world influence. If you want to get official, it’s a type of Ghetto Tech. You don’t want to miss this if you’re into B More / Dutch / Moombahton / anything that might appear on Generation Bass.

Being at the top of their game YAKfilms has almost single handily achieved worldwide recognition in both the underground dance scene and in the music video producing industry. Getting shout outs from MTV and the ABC, YAKfilms has been given exclusive access to dance shows around the whole world from Paris to Tokyo!In fact appearing on YAKfilms has become a sort of must for any dance crew trying to make it big in the industry. So we here at Apes with Barrel decided to go back to the routes of blogs, that of discovering new underground talent.

-First and foremost! Who’s the person behind B’zwax?

The B in B’zwax stands for Ben. I am part of Yak. It’s no mystery; B’zwax is just a pseudonym I use when I produce music.

-I’ve surfed all over the net to find some info about you but to my regret, my search didn’t provide me with much info. How did you meet Yak and eventually started producing beats for his dance videos?

Because I am a part of YAK, the musical collaborations on some of the videos we produce came naturally. Yak is actually a 4-person crew, but we are only 3 to work on video production. I’ve been making instrumental music ever since I was young. Yoram, one of the members of the group who started Yak is a childhood friend of mine with whom I shared my passion for video and photography as we were growing up. When I officially joined the group in late 2009, we had already used some of my tracks on some unreleased dance videos, but it wasn’t until our winning video “Golly the Rainmaker” for the 2010 East Bay Express’ 24-Hour Green Film Festival that my tracks really started coming out. As far as the web, it’s pretty recent- you won’t find much because most of the stuff that I’ve made never got released. The beats that I’ve made have always stayed amongst close friends because it was never more serious than that.

-Looking through you’re soundcloud, I’ve realised that you also use YAKfilm’s slogan (a bull), does this mean that you specifically produce beats for YAKfilms?

That’s intentional. It’s actually a yak like the animal. All the tracks on my soundcloud have been used or will be used for YAK productions. I feel it’s an easier platform to distribute and share the music that we use on our youtube channel.

-Strings and ‘asian-like’ sounds are at the heart of your tunes, where does this inspiration come from? Are there any specific hip hop producer that’ve influenced you?

I wouldn’t say that there is one specific producer… Many hip-hop producers have influenced me like Madlib, Dilla, even Flylo just to name a few… but there is so much good stuff out there, it’s hard not to listen to many different kinds of music. I would have to say that inspiration also comes from my close friends who are mostly musicians. Without them I don’t think I would’ve discovered the beauty of let’s say Cretan music for example… I like to experiment with many things. One of my close friends would always blast old Greek music in my ears and play me a tune when he could. It took me a while to appreciate it like he did, but I guess I did that in my own way.

-As a hip-hop enthusiast, what’s your view on modern day hip-hop? Do you think the ‘philosophy’ and culture behind hip-hop has drastically changed during these past 10 years?

That’s a tough question to answer alone… yes and no. I mean of course it has… Hip-hop is a relatively young culture, and like every music culture, it goes through some changes as it evolves. People today talk about Hip-hop and overanalyze the situation a bit too much. But my truth is that it’s alive. Music is just one aspect of it. There are so many elements that are alive and well in the culture that I witness, dance for example, that I really don’t see going away anytime soon. In the last 10 years? … I grew up in it, I see it changing. A lot of your favorite artists back then are not who they were today, but fortunately there are still a handful of artists that try to preserve those good sounds… you just have to find them. The philosophy is still there with a few… haha.

-Besides hip hop are there any other genres that you would like to experiment with?

Of course! Hip-hop as allowed me to dip into many different musical cultures, from classical to jazz, even electro just to name a few. Instrumental Hip-hop is an interesting thing because it doesn’t have a strict guide to follow. The music I make for YAK is music that dancers dance to, and that usually doesn’t always have to be ‘hip-hop’. But on that same note, not all the music I make has to be danced to.

-I’m dying to get my hands on some of your tracks like Rubbing Alcohol, Belly Dance (JD 2010 menu beat) and Tractor Beam, are they ever going to be available in an EP? If yes, when would it drop?

Of course, I’ve been working on that… The EP is out, on my bandcamp. The link will be available on my soundcloud and obviously on the YouTube videos, as well as on the yakfilms Facebook page

> One of the first generation subgenres of UK garage (alongside Grime and Dubstep), Bassline House developed around sheffield’s niche club, it is probably the most reminiscent of speed garage, but eschewing any of the grit and macho aesthetics of its contemporaries, instead keeping with a 4×4 derived highly produced ULTRAPop-py sound, with multiple melodic interweaving dubstep style basses and/or organ basses, mostly a midlands thing, popular with the local pakistani clubgoers is the word. Bassline really can’t be taken too seriously, but i dont think youre supposed to, unabashedly fun though
